Pond Closure
Project DescriptionThis site was a wastewater impoundment at a former wood treating facility located on the Florida I Alabama border. Several ponds primarily were used to separate and reutilize wood treating materials that contained both creosote and pentachlorophenol (PCP) affected water. Two of the impoundments were closed in accordance with ADEM approved closure plans, but the third was filled with available soils from the plant and was never properly closed. The work itself included the relocation of a nearby stream, excavation of contaminated soils I sediments located outside the defined boundaries of the impoundment, construction of a slurry wall, installation of a groundwater collection trench, construction of a 3 acre RCRA cap, and various other site restoration activities. The project duration lasted approximately nine months, totaled over 10,000 on-site man-hours, and was completed without one significant accident or incident. The project also experienced two hurricanes during the course of the work that, due to ROS’ preparation efforts, only caused slight delays in the on- site production. |
