Airport Landfill Capping
Project DescriptionROS was contracted to relocate over 80,000 cy of waste and install a landfill cap over the 23-acre municipal county landfill. The landfill cap consisted of 7 layers over the waste: geotextile, gas vent layer, geomembrane, and barrier protection layer, second layer of geotextile, topsoil and vegetative cover. URS had to work within FAA regulations and coordinate closely with the Dutchess County Airport because part of the landfill was on the airport’s property. Storm water drainage features were also constructed as part of the closure. ROS worked closely with the Design Engineer and Construction Managers to resolve many of the field changes that were implemented. Unknown drums were encountered during the waste relocation process. The drums were sampled and over packed in accordance with OSHA requirements, and then disposed of off-site. The project was completed in 15 months with over 34,000 man-hours and zero incidents. |
