Soil Stabilization and Groundwater Treatment

Project Description

The 2-acre site was the former location of a phosphate fertilizer manufacturing facility. Contaminants of concern in the site soils included lead and arsenic. Groundwater beneath the site had a low pH with lead and arsenic impacts. The site was no longer owned by the client and has been split into several parcels with active businesses. Site cleanup was managed under an Administrative Order on consent issued by the EPA. The final remedy included the in-situ stabilization of unsaturated soils with one treatment reagent, and the ex-situ treatment of saturated soils and groundwater with another treatment reagent. The treated, saturated soils were used as backfill on-site. URS provided a turn-key approach to the remedy implementation, with ROS supplying all of the civil and remedial contracting.

Project highlights included:
  • In-situ stabilization of unsaturated soils using a mixing head.
  • Ex-situ treatment of saturated soils using a mixing head and conventional bucket mixing.
  • Reconstruction of the on-site drainage ditch.
  • Capping of the Site.
