Drum Management and Disposal

Project Description

Numerous containers, full of unidentified wastes and scrap materials, were scattered about a 52- acre partially wooded property. ROS began site work by completing a reconnaissance of the property buildings and grounds to locate the drums and containers. Once located, the containers were moved to a HazCat area set up in one of the site buildings.

Additionally, drums containing waste were staged during previous site work in “torpedo” carriers as secondary containment. ROS opened the torpedo carriers under level B protection due to the unknown nature of the materials. A total of 23 carriers were opened and found to contain full drums, crushed drums, impacted soil, and trash. Many of the full drums were leaking or in a deteriorated condition. The contents of those drums were transferred into new drums and relocated to the HazCat area. The liquids that had leaked into the torpedo carriers were collected also into new drums and relocated to the HazCat area. The impacted soil was removed from the carriers and staged for disposal in roll off boxes. The torpedo carriers were then decontaminated and staged on site.

A total of 148 containers were sampled. The samples were analyzed in the field for hazardous categorization. Containers were segregated according to hazard category. Additional samples were collected from each of the 14 hazard categories and submitted to an off-site laboratory for disposal analysis. The contents of the 148 containers were consolidated into 122 drums for disposal. By consolidating waste into 55-gallon drums instead of over packing, and utilizing bulk disposal of solid material, a savings of approximately $10,000 on the estimated disposal cost was realized.
