Dredging & Dewatering of E Pond Sediments

Project Description

ROS was assigned to design a remediation system to restore lost capacity of E Pond (~3.6 MG). This pond is utilized to provide both solids settling and retention time for cooling of discharge without disruption to plant operations. The plant has an average flow rate of 3.5 MGD, permissible discharge of 20 ppm (24-hr daily average) and temperature less than 100F. ROS was additionally tasked with removing the vegetative growth of phragmites that have reduced the capacity of E Pond by an estimated 25-30%. All sediments were transported by rail to a non-hazardous industrial waste landfill in South Carolina. Overall, 9,696 cy of sediment were removed.

URS will perform the following scope of work to successfully complete this project:
  • Conduct Pre-Existing Survey of E Pond
  • Clearing and Grubbing of Western fenced access road
  • Installation of Five (5) floating Silt Curtains
  • Initial phragmite removal along west bank and Spillway with Mini-Excavator
  • Mobilization and setup of the specialized dredging and dewatering equipment described above
  • Twenty-Four (24) Hour/Day Filter Press Operation, five (5)six to (6) days per week, 12-Hour Shifts
  • Dredging during daylight hours only (~ 4 hrs/day)
  • Loading of Filter Cake Sediment solids into lined transportation containers provided by DuPont with conveyors and Front End Loader
  • Removal of Phragmites using Clamshell and Long Reach Excavator
  • Loading phragmites into transportation containers
  • Decontamination of all process equipment
  • Site restoration of Process lay down area
  • Perform Final As-Built E Pond Survey
  • Re-seeding, fertilizing and mulching of disturbed grassy areas
  • Demobilization from Site
