Everglades Restoration

Project Description

ROS was awarded one of seven contracts to provide environmental restoration services to Storm Water Treatment Area 1 — approximately 5,500 acres of land. ROS mobilized to the site in March 2002 to perform construction of the main levee, the installation of 13 water control structures/gates, and the construction of 8 cells/water basins. The levee was approximately 4.5 miles long, 10’ high and 14’ wide across the top. It was constructed using onsite material in 1-foot lifts. The water control gates were installed at various positions along the levee to control the passage of water. The cells were created for the treatment of contaminated water. Each cell (500-600 acres) was constructed to specific elevation and grade and required the movement of approximately 5 million cy of soil. The levee and cell earthwork was self-performed by ROS personnel. Work was completed in August 2004 and the site was transferred to the South Florida Management District, which operates the site as a successful portion of the Everglades Restoration program.
